Samsung acquires QD vision, a quantum dot display technology manufacturer
Jung chil hee, director of Samsung Institute of advanced technology, confirmed the news. He said QD vision would become part of Samsung.
It is understood that QD vision will become part of Samsung's R & D department to develop quantum dot LED displays suitable for the consumer electronics market for the company, thus posing a major challenge to OLED displays.
QD vision was founded in 2004 by a number of MIT researchers. The company focuses on the core technology of quantum dot materials. So far, the company has established cooperative relations with TV manufacturers such as TCL, Hisense and Sony.
At present, Samsung is competing fiercely with local manufacturer LG around the next generation TV technical standards. The acquisition will enhance Samsung's strength and make the competition between the two companies white hot.
The acquisition is the first major transaction since Samsung vice president Li Zairong joined the board of directors last month. Prior to this, Samsung promised earlier this year to launch 14 suhd TVs this year, all of which will use quantum dot technology.
